Starting from the 2025/2026 season, Ajax Amsterdam will permanently reintroduce its classic logo, marking a momentous return to its traditional emblem. This decision, eagerly anticipated by fans for decades, aligns perfectly with the club's upcoming 125th anniversary celebration on March 18, 2025. The return of this iconic symbol is more than just a visual change; it’s a reaffirmation of the club’s rich history and commitment to its core values.
A Gift to the Fans and the Club's Identity Ajax Logo
In a statement, Menno Geelen, CEO of Ajax, highlighted the significance of this decision:
"Ajax will celebrate its 125th anniversary on March 18. The celebrations will include the announcement of the return of the classic logo. We know that the majority of our fans have cherished this wish for years, and we felt that our 125th anniversary was the perfect moment to give back the classic logo to our fans and ourselves."
The decision comes as a tribute to the club's deep-rooted heritage. The classic Ajax logo, featuring the silhouette of the Greek hero Ajax in a minimalist yet powerful design, was initially replaced in the 1991/1992 season with a more modern, stylized version. Over the years, however, fans have consistently expressed a longing for the original logo, which they felt represented the true spirit and identity of the club.
Staying True to Ajax DNA
Geelen emphasized the importance of the Ajax DNA, explaining how the club's philosophy and core values have shaped its success over the years:
"History has shown that we are at our best when we remain true to the Ajax DNA. That’s why we are doing everything within the club to uphold that DNA, from our football philosophy to our core values. Bringing back the classic logo symbolizes this commitment and serves as both a tribute to our rich history and an inspiration for the future—a future that relies on everything we hold dear about our club."
This move is seen as a way to honor the traditions of Ajax, reminding fans and players alike of the club's illustrious past, filled with legendary moments, iconic matches, and unforgettable players.
125th Anniversary
Ernst Boekhorst, Chairman of the Board of Directors, echoed the sentiment, calling it a "very fitting moment" for such a significant change:
"The 125th anniversary feels like a very fitting moment to give the logo back to the club, the fans, and ourselves. We are delighted to make such a contribution."
The return of the classic logo will be celebrated today at the sold-out Johan Cruijff ArenA, where Ajax Legends will face off against Real Madrid Legends in a special commemorative match. The event promises to be a nostalgic celebration for fans, bridging the past and present of the club's storied legacy.
