Genoa Cricket and Football Club, the oldest football club in Italy, has embarked on a transformative journey by welcoming a new majority shareholder, Romanian entrepreneur Dan Șucu. This strategic move, finalized on December 18, marks a significant milestone in the club’s storied history and opens a new chapter filled with promise and ambition.
The Details Behind the Acquisition
Following a capital increase resolution on December 14 totaling €45.36 million—comprising €5.36 million allocated gratuitously and €40 million in paid capital—Dan Sucu's investment vehicle acquired approximately 77% ownership in Genoa CFC. This acquisition leaves previous shareholders in the minority and provides the club with vital resources to strengthen its sporting ambitions.
Who Is Dan Șucu?
Dan Șucu is a prominent figure in the international business landscape and serves as the President of the Confederation of Romanian Employers (Confederația Patronală Concordia), equivalent to Italy’s Confindustria. Born in Bucharest on April 25, 1963, he is best known as the founder of Mobexpert, Romania’s largest furniture brand, which employs over 2,200 people. Beyond furniture, Dan Sucu has made his mark in real estate and media, including a pivotal role in the Romanian economic newspaper Ziarul Financiar.
An ardent sports enthusiast, Șucu is also the owner of Rapid București, a historic Romanian football club with over a century of tradition. Under his stewardship, Rapid București has seen significant investments in modern infrastructure and youth development, boasting an academy of around 700 young athletes. His commitment to football extends beyond the pitch, leveraging the sport as a tool for social inclusion and personal growth for young people.
What This Means for Genoa CFC
The majority stake acquisition by Șucu signals a new era of stability and growth for Genoa CFC. With substantial financial backing and a proven track record in both business and football, Șucu aims to elevate Genoa's infrastructure and strengthen its competitive edge. This partnership is expected to reinforce the club’s ability to achieve sporting excellence while preserving its rich heritage. The club expressed gratitude to its loyal fan base for their unwavering support and optimism about this new phase. By aligning with Dan Șucu’s vision, Genoa CFC is poised to enhance its reputation on both the national and international stages.
