The Saudi Ministry of Sport has revealed the key features of the development work that will be carried out on King Fahd Sports City Stadium in the Saudi capital Riyadh. The stadium will undergo renovations following the match between Al-Hilal and Al-Nassr on Friday, in the 15th round of the Saudi Professional League.
The ministry explained that work will be carried out to provide green spaces, bicycle paths, a sports store, as well as a sports museum and multiple retail outlets on the sides of the stadium. As for the stadium itself, the most notable change will be the removal of the athletic track, which will be converted into a temporary removable track. The ministry also pointed to the construction of a multi-purpose sports hall, golf courses, five side football pitches, two FIFA training pitches, as well as a theater, an exhibition space, a football academy, and futsal.
The iconic stadium, known as the Pearl of Stadiums, will undergo renovations as it is part of the stadiums hosting the 2027 AFC Asian Cup, the most prominent major event to be hosted by Saudi Arabia in the near future.
Here are some of the key details of the development work:
- The capacity of the stadium will be increased from 58,398 to 80,000.
- The athletic track will be removed and replaced with a temporary removable track.
- A multi-purpose sports hall, golf courses, five side football pitches, and two FIFA training pitches will be built.
- A theater, an exhibition space, a football academy, and futsal will be established. The development work is scheduled to be completed in time for the 2027 AFC Asian Cup.
