Roger HampelNew York City FC Unveils Refreshed Club Badge as Part of Visual Identity Update
New York City FC (NYCFC) proudly revealed an updated version of their iconic club badge, marking the beginning of an exciting new era for the club. The refreshed badge stays true to the original design while incorporating subtle yet powerful enhancements, reflecting NYCFC’s ongoing evolution both on and off the pitch.
This badge update is part of a broader visual identity refresh launched earlier this year, which builds on the strengths of the club’s 10+ year history. Designed with input from fans and creative experts, the new badge celebrates the club’s origins while refining key visual elements to align with NYCFC’s vision for the future.
Honoring the Legacy with Modern Refinements New York City FC Badge
At the heart of the refreshed badge is a redrawn NYC monogram, created by renowned New York typographer Tobias Frere-Jones. The monogram is now bolder, with thicker strokes that harmonize with the surrounding "New York City Football Club" lettering. This refined typography is supported by a custom-drawn, proprietary club typeface designed by Nina Stössinger, Senior Designer at Frere-Jones Type. Inspired by pre-unification New York City Subway tile signage, the font adds a local, historical touch to the club’s modern identity.
The badge’s iconic light blue and orange outer rings have also been updated with thicker lines for increased legibility. These enhanced color contrasts allow the club’s name and monogram to stand out more prominently, ensuring greater visibility across various applications.
Fan-Driven Design Process
The design update came after extensive consultation with NYCFC fans, ensuring that the changes stayed true to the core brand elements that supporters have cherished since the club’s inception. The updated badge honors NYCFC’s past while setting a confident tone for the future, reflecting the team’s ambitions both on and off the field.
Speaking about the new design, Milo Kowalski, Senior Creative Director at New York City FC, explained:
"The outgoing versions of the club logos will forever be a part of our story, but we are incredibly excited by the new iterations of these same marks which have engendered so much enthusiasm for this team to date. At its essence, the badge remains effectively unchanged: our NYC monogram anchoring a ring of City blue and orange in which our club's name is proudly emblazoned. But it is also decidedly bolder and more confident than before — ready to lead us into a future full of ambition and promise."
A Modular Logo System for the Future
One of the key aspects of the badge update is the introduction of a modular logo system. This new system allows for the flexible use of the NYC monogram across various branding and marketing materials, ensuring consistent representation of the club’s identity across multiple platforms. The enhanced badge and logo system will be featured prominently in future NYCFC marketing campaigns, merchandise, and digital assets, strengthening the club’s overall brand presence.
